Manchester United got their pre-season off to a winning start with a 2-1 win against Wayne Rooney’s side at Pride Park.

Tahith Chong put United ahead in the first half after winning the ball high up the pitch. He charged Derby defender Mac Bird and robbed him of the ball before firing the ball into the net.

Facundo Pellistri scored the second for United a minute before the hour mark, before Derby’s Colin Kazim-Richards pulled one back for the Rams after ten minutes.

Speaking after the game, Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was pleased with the performance of his team, as he admitted that the first pre-season game is never easy.

Speaking after the game, Solskjaer said: “The first game is always difficult, it’s the first test of 45 minutes, big pitch, took a bit of time to get going, loads of young players getting their chance to play with some of the first-team ones.

“[Tom Heaton] has conducted himself so well throughout his career. I was just on the end of my career when he was coming up, so I’m so happy to have him. Tom wants to play as well, I think he’s been unlucky with an injury last season. I think he would have been in the England squad if not. Of course, he’s got ambitions.”
