Manchester United are reportedly close to sealing a deal for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.
Varane has been a top defender over the past years for club and country, and the 28-year-old has literally won everything from the Champions League to the World Cup.
Varane built up a rock-solid relationship with Sergio Ramos lasting several years at Madrid, and following the departure of Ramos to PSG, United are now set to break the final part of the centre-back partnership.
Ex-Madrid sporting director Jorge Valdano has admitted that United are getting a formidable signing, and now Madrid will be thinking of how to get two top centre-backs instead of one to start a new partnership.
Valdano compared the Ramos and Varane partnership to that of Georgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci.
With Ramos having already left for Paris Saint-Germain, the 65-year-old told El Transistor: “Two titans leave Real Madrid with a strategic position in the field.
“Ramos and Varane mean something similar to [Georgio] Chiellini and [Leonardo] Bonucci in Italy.”
Meanwhile, former Manchester United striker Andy Cole has hailed the decision to sign Varane, and he believes it would be a fantastic signing.
“If that happens, I think it’s going to be a big, big positive,” former United and England striker Cole told The Mirror.
“He’s still very young for a centre-half and has played at the highest level for many many years now.
“He’s won numerous championships and Champions Leagues with Real Madrid, World Cup winner
“So he obviously has the qualities to bring Manchester United forward, so if it happens I think it would be a fantastic signing.”
