Liverpool legend Jamie Caragher mocked Ferdinand, after Carrick led Man United to victory in first game in charge against Villarreal
Jamie Carragher couldn’t hold back the urge to make fun of Rio Ferdinand, following Manchester United’s victory over Villarreal on Tuesday.
Carrick was appointed caretaker manager of Man United, after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal on Sunday, with his first task being to lead the club in their UEFA Champions League tie against Villarreal. And it was a memorable outing for the former midfielder, as United recorded a 2-0 win away from home.
After the game, Carragher quickly took to his Twitter account to call on Man United to get out a contract, and get Carrick to sign a deal to be manager on a permanent basis.
The former Liverpool defender’s tweet read, “Man Utd might not thank me, but get the contract out put it on the table & let him sign it, let him right whatever numbers he wants, let him sign the contract. Carrick’s at the wheel man!”
Caragher’s tweet was a somewhat veiled dig at Ferdinand, who had made the same exact comments around the time Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was appointed interim manager at United back in 2019.
After United knocked PSG out of the UEFA Champions League in March 2019, Ferdinand had said in excitement, “Man Utd might not thank me, but get the contract out, put it on the table, let him sign it, let him write whatever numbers he wants to put on there, given what he’s done since he’s come in.
“Let him sign the contract. Ole’s at the wheel, man. Man United are back!”
Well, while we can’t say whether or not Carrick will enjoy the same confidence Solskjaer got from both the fans and the Man United board, seeing how things ended with the Norwegian, we can say that anything is possible, and things are looking up for the Englishman.
Man United are however, still in the hunt for a new manager, with Zinedine Zidane, Ernesto Valverde, Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag the main candidates for the role.
