‘It’s a massive, massive overreaction’ — Manchester City legend Micah Richards shares his thoughts Manchester United’s appointment of Ralf Rangnick
Manchester City legend Micah Richards has questioned Manchester United’s motives in bringing Ralf Rangnick to Old Trafford and also feels there have been massive overreactions with regards to the German’s appointment.
The 63-year-old will be in charge at Old Trafford until the end of the season before taking up a consultancy role for two years.
The former RB Leipzig boss’ start to life in Manchester will be delayed after issues with his work permit, meaning Michael Carrick will oversee his second Premier League match when the Red Devils take on Arsenal on Thursday night.
The German has been hailed for his influence on current Premier League managers Thomas Tuchel and Jurgen Klopp, and for his successes at Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig.
But BBC and Sky Sports pundit Richards believes the hype around the Rangnick’s appointment is way too much.
“You know why I’m groaning? I’ll tell you why I’m groaning,” he told Radio 5 Live’s The Monday Night Club.
“Everyone’s making out like Rangnick is some sort of messiah. like he’s come to this country and he’s got five league titles and a Champions League. It’s a massive, massive overreaction.
“No, no, no! I’m definitely not that,” he said denying he was doubting his credentials.
“You’ve always got to give someone a chance and time. I’m just talking about everyone jumping on the bandwagon like he’s the messiah.”
Richards went on to question the approach United have taken by appointing an interim until the summer.
“Who is going to be the manager? We’re talking about Rangnick because he’s got the consultancy after the six months,” Richards questioned.
“I get him coming to Manchester United and I actually think it’s really good for United to have a clear plan as to what they want to do, the style of play, the players that they’ll want to attract if that’s what he wants to do. So I get that part.
“But I don’t get the part that he’s coming in there for six months then someone is coming in as he takes a step back. I don’t get that.
“Who is he going to get in there?”
