‘They’ve made it hard for the players’
Manchester United were beaten by Manchester City 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, and it was a shambolic second half display from Ralf Rangnick’s side.
Former Manchester United star Teddy Sheringham believes that the constant chopping of managers at the club has made it hard for the players, who no longer have a fight in them.
“I’ve played in a very dominant Manchester United side, where it’s demanded that you’re 100 per cent committed and [show] desire for the cause,” Sheringham toldSky Sports.
“Everybody’s rowing in the same boat, together, led by a top manager.
“I’ve also been where there’s fragments in a team and in a club.
“When you’re playing in a team that’s so focussed and rowing the same way, it’s all great. When you’re playing for a manager that some people are thinking, ‘he won’t be here at the end of the season, I don’t really need to try my hardest. He’ll be gone, I’ll work for the next manager.’
“There’s vibes like that you can see all over the pitch. There’s just problems at the club and I think that comes from leadership in the football club.
“You look at Manchester City, they’re led by a top man that is devoted to Manchester City being better and the best that they can be.
“You look at Manchester United, they had an interim manager [Ole Gunnar Solskjaer], sacked him, get another interim manager in.
“What is going in at this top football club? That filters down. If you’ve got someone there for the long stay and with the desire to make them better, everyone can follow with you.
“But when it’s not, it makes it hard for everyone to follow in that same way because it’s going to change at the end of the season and we’ve got to start again under a new manager with new ideas.”
