Rangnick could drop Ronaldo for important clash against Tottenham

Manchester United play host to Tottenham this weekend at Old Trafford, and Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo could miss the team’s action for the second game in a row.

Ronaldo had missed the embarrassing 4-1 defeat to Manchester City due to a recurring  hip problem, and the 37-year-old returned to Portugal to recuperate.

The Portugal captain was back at Carrington on Tuesday to be assessed by medical staff and underwent light training sessions ahead of the weekend’s game.

Ronaldo is desperate to return to action ahead of the massive clash against Tottenham, with both teams fighting for a Champions League place. However, Ralf Rangnick isn’t too keen on rushing back the 37-year-old into action.

The United boss and his medical staff are still assessing whether to rest Ronaldo or start him from the bench on Saturday, bearing in mind the Champions League second leg clash with Atletico Madrid will come up just three days after.

For Ronaldo, he’s ready to play every game, but the United hero is no longer 27, and Rangnick wouldn’t want an aggravation of the injury.

United are still lacking strikers, with Edinson Cavani not yet fit, Mason Greenwood suspended and Marcus Rashford devoid of form. However, Raphael Varane is back in training and should be available for selection.
