Manchester United have crashed out of the Champions League after losing to Atletico Madrid 1-0 right at Old Trafford.

United failed to make their home advantage count, as they lost the second leg right in front of their own fans after a 1-1 draw away at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

Manchester United legends Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes have criticised youngster Anthony Elanga as the major culprit in the build-up to Atletico’s goal.

Elanga failed to track back after he felt he was fouled in the build-up to the goal, only for Renan Lodi to score from a free header just before half-time.

Ferdinand and Scholes both insist the young Swede showed a lack of discipline and eventually cost his team.

“I go back to Elanga, this is where you have to be disciplined and follow people, put in those hard yards,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“You need bodies to come back and to chase and to help and unfortunately in that position it was one man against three.”

Scholes added: “The back four, don’t get me wrong they are absolutely all over the place but Elanga, he has to sprint back into shape.

“This is the last 16 of the Champions League against a team who are unbelievably experienced in this competition.

“When you are out of your shape, you’ve lost the ball the first thing you do is sprint back and he hasn’t done it.”
