Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire has been named as the most miserable player in England by researchers who conducted a new study.

Researchers at TonerGiant have used an artificial intelligence emotion recognition analysis tool to analyse footballers’ Instagram posts.

The researchers aim was to see which players have exhibited the happiest and saddest emotions during the current campaign.

Unsurprisingly, Maguire came out bottom among the pool of players, with the AI tool recording a score of 23.4 out of 100, which is -43.9 per cent lower than the happiness levels of the average footballer.

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount topped the charts with 53.7 out of 100.

The Manchester United squad was deemed to be generally unhappy, with the club coming second bottom of the Premier League table, with an average of 34.9 out of 100.
