“Tell him to f*** off” – Manchester United legend told Sir Alex Ferguson
Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has revealed he told legendary former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson to ‘f*** off’ when Ferguson tried to sign him as a 14 year old.
Rooney would go on and enjoy the finest years of his career at Old Trafford in the red of United but as a young teenager, he only had eyes on his boyhood club Everton.
Rooney told The Sun: “Sir Alex Ferguson tried to sign me when I was 14. He was on the phone to my mum and dad.
“They said, ‘Alex is on the phone, Manchester United want to sign you’. I said, ‘Tell him to f*** off. I want to play for Everton’.
“Then as time went on, I knew I had to play for Alex Ferguson. The reason I signed for United was Alex Ferguson.”
Rooney left The Toffees for Old Trafford in a £30m transfer in 2004 when he was just 18 and even then, Ferguson didn’t hold back on how good he thought Rooney would turn out to be.
At United, Rooney won the Premier League five times and the Champions League once, as well as one FA Cup and two League Cups.
