This manager is shocked Manchester United chose Erik ten Hag as new manager
Mauricio Pochettino was caught unaware by Manchester United announcing Erik ten Hag as manager, according to The Athletic via Daily Mail.
Ten Hag was confirmed as new Manchester United boss on Thursday morning after agreeing to a three-year deal with the option of an additional year and will take charge at the end of the season.
Ten Hag and Pochettino were the leading favourites for the Manchester United job before the Red Devils opted to go for Ten Hag.
United had planned reportedly to call Pochettino to inform him directly that he had missed out on the job before the announcement came. The timing of the news was ‘awkward’ as Pochettino had felt ‘confident’.
As late as this month, the PSG boss’s representatives apparently had held discussions with Matt Judge over potential contract details.
Pochettino was confident he would get the Manchester United job after building a relationship with the club dating back to 2018 when he first met Ed Woodward.
The Argentine is said to have been gathering information about Manchester as a city, the structure of the club and the personality of United players.
