Manchester United have identified signing a central midfielder as priority for the club this summer and Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is one of transfer targets for the Red Devils.
Barcelona manager Xavi insists De Jong is still a ‘key player’ for the club despite interest from Manchester United in his signature.
Xavi also gave Manchester United a huge boost in the pursuit of the midfielder after suggesting Barcelona’s financial crises could force the Spanish side to cash-in on a number of players this summer.
Barcelona are reportedly in a debt of around £1.2billion and will reportedly sell a number of players this summer including De Jong.
“I have said many times that Frenkie is very important. He’s a key player,” the Barcelona manager stated at a press conference.
“Then there is also the financial situation of the club and it has to be decided. I’m not talking about Frenkie, in general.”
Meanwhile, De Jong has already revealed his position to Manchester United ahead of a summer move to Old Trafford.
He told The Guardian : “I don’t necessarily have one position where I really want to play, but I think I’m at my best if I’m in a role where I can often touch the ball.”
