Manchester United are interested in a summer move for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong and according to reports, Barcelona are open to selling the midfielder this summer.

Barcelona signed De Jong for €75million in 2019 but are open to selling the 25 year old midfielder for just €60million this summer.

1) Barcelona are still trying to claw their way out of a big financial mess and have to sell this summer to raise funds. Barcelona need the money and not many other players in their squad would be able to rake in as much as De Jong.

2) De Jong has struggled for consistent form since joining Barcelona for an initial €75million from Ajax in 2019. Despite being a regular for the Spanish side, he has failed to establish himself in one particular position or role.

3) De Jong was supposed to be the long-term replacement for Sergio Busquets but his lack of positional discipline doesn’t make him the man to do that job.

At Ajax, where he operated as a deep-lying midfielder, he still had plenty of freedom to roam. That isn’t the case in the Busquets role at Barcelona, which is a disciplined role, a foundation of Barcelona’s traditional positional play.

4) Despite claims by Barcelona boss Xavi that De Jong is an important player for Barcelona, De Jong has completed the full 90 minutes just 13 times in 33 games since Xavi arrived last year. De Jong isn’t so important to Barcelona as Xavi has publicly claimed.

Manchester United aren’t the only club interested in signing De Jong this summer. Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in signing the 25 year old midfielder.
