Manchester United target Jurrien Timber was hauled off just after the hour mark in Netherlands 2-2 draw against Poland in the Nations League.

The Ajax defender, who is wanted by Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, had a disappointing performance for Holland and was then substituted by Holland head coach Louis van Gaal.

Van Gaal admitted after the game that Jurrien Timber struggled against Poland because he was playing on “his final legs”.

According to Van Gaal, the 20 year old is beginning to suffer after a long season for Ajax.

“So I was certainly not satisfied with Timber,” Van Gaal told the media after the game.

“Well, one action is not enough. Believe me. You have to play football as a team and then you have to carry out the assignment that we agree on together. So you have to play fast.”

Van Gaal added: “I think Timber is playing on his final legs. He has played the entire season and looks tired. And now he has to play again, in a different system.”

Van Gaal has previously warned Jurrien Timber against joining Manchester United this summer.

“I think a player with his [Timber’s] qualities can play in the Premier League,” Van Gaal said.

“That’s not a problem. But if he has to make this step now… that’s another question.

“It is not so wise I think [to move to United]. He has to play.”

Despite Manchester United’s interest in signing the 20 year old centre-back this summer, Jurrien Timber is concerned about joining Manchester United in a World Cup year.

Dutch media outlet De Telegraaf claims Timber is worried about changing clubs in a World Cup year and knows he must be playing regularly if he is to remain in Louis van Gaal’s squad.

While he is assured of his place in the starting XI at Ajax, he is worried that will not be the case at Manchester United despite the presence of his former boss Erik ten Hag.

Timber is reportedly happy to face the challenge of becoming a key centre-back at Manchester United but is worried if that’s a challenge he should be taking in a World Cup year.
