£120,000-a-week Man Utd star arrives Italy ahead of Roma transfer
Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has arrived Italy today ahead of his free transfer to Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma.
The Serbian touched down in the Italian capital this morning just after his scheduled 9.30 CET arrival time at Ciampino Airport.
Several Roma fans were on-hand to welcome Matic, who will become Roma’s first official acquisition of the summer.
Matic will leave Manchester United after five years at Old Trafford when his contract with the club expires at the end of June.
Mourinho has signed Nemanja Matic twice previously – bringing him back to Chelsea from Benfica in 2014 before reuniting at United in 2017.
This will be the third time the former Manchester United boss is signing Matic.
According to Sky Sport Italia, as per Football Italia, the 33-year-old is due to arrive at the Serie A side’s training base for a medical, ahead of signing with the Europa Conference League champions.
Nemanja Matic will reportedly sign a one year deal with Roma with an option of a second year. His salary is expected to be around £3million.
Mourinho has revealed why he’s signing Matic for the third time after previously signing the midfielder at Chelsea and Manchester United.
Mourinho told Sky Sports: “Everyone knows my relationship with Nemanja. He’s one of the guys with my trust. We won together, we fought together – in United too.
“He’s a fantastic player, but that’s a kind of answer that is not good for me or for the player.”
Newly promoted Premier League side Fulham were also reportedly keen on signing Nemanja Matic this summer.
Fulham boss Marco Silva was reportedly keen on adding an experienced player like Nemanja Matic to his youthful Fulham side.
Italian side Juventus were also reportedly interested in signing Matic as a free agent this summer.
Matic made 189 appearances for Manchester United across his five seasons – failing to win a trophy at a club for the first time in his career.
