Rashford, who was part of Southgate’s squad for the previous World Cup and Euro 2020, and Sancho, who was also named in last summer’s European Championships party, were not included in Southgate’s latest group for June’s four Nations League fixtures.
The pair must start the new season in brilliant form as Southgate has just one more international break in September before he names his World Cup squad for Qatar 2022.
Southgate has warned both players that they have a lot of work to do if they want to make England’s World Cup squad.
Gareth Southgate was asked whether or not United’s players could be fresher ahead of the World Cup after the club failed to qualify for the Champions League, but the England manager’s response was damning.
Gareth Southgate said: “We’ve only got one with us [Maguire]! They’ve got a lot to do to get back in the squad.”
Gareth Southgate has previously warned both Rashford and Sancho that they will miss out on the showpiece this winter if they fail to perform next campaign.
“There’s enough of a block of games at the beginning of next season that people can still play their way in [to the World Cup squad],” Gareth Southgate said.
“Of course, the closer we get, the more difficult it is.
“But they’ve got to start playing well with their club. Neither of them have really played at the end of the season.
“England is a consequence of what you’re doing at your club and you’ve got to get your club bit right.
“At the moment there’s obviously room for those two, compared to others in those positions that we’ve picked, since their level hasn’t been at the level of the others.
“It depends on getting in the team and impressing the manager there and starting the season well.”
Gareth Southgate will announce his 26-man England World Cup squad on Wednesday November 9 or Thursday November 10.
England’s first World Cup game is against Iran on November 21.
