Manchester United eager to sign £354k-a-week star this week
Manchester United are eager to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong this week, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.
The Dutch midfielder is a priority signing for Erik ten Hag but Manchester United have so far failed to reach an agreement with Barcelona.
Manchester United have offered €70million for the Dutch international midfielder but Barcelona are reportedly demanding €100million for the transfer.
Frenkie de Jong is on massive wages at Barcelona, with it being reported that he takes home £354,000 a week, according to Givemesport.
Barcelona are struggling financially and owe about €1billion and they need to sell De Jong more than Manchester United need to buy.
According to Dean Jones, Manchester United are not wasting any time and are hoping to conclude a deal for the player this week.
Speaking to GMS, the journalist said: “United want to get the deal done this week and, to be honest, they see this as a statement of intent over where they are heading.
“That’s why they’re super keen to get this tied up as soon as possible, because they want to get other people into the club and let people know that just because they haven’t got [Darwin] Nunez doesn’t mean they don’t have ambition.”
It’s also easy to see why Manchester United boss Ten Hag is keen on signing Frenkie de Jong this summer.
There are probably few midfielders who are better on the ball than De Jong.
As per FBref, the Barcelona midfielder has ranked in the 92nd percentile for pass completion, the 94th for progressive carries and the 95th for progressive passes received among his positional peers over the last year.
Frenkie de Jong has admitted that he would love to have Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski in his team and that has led to increased speculation online regarding both of their immediate futures.
“He’s an amazing player, one of the best in the world,” De Jong opined when asked about Poland’s top goalscorer.
When pressed further regarding Lewandowski’s supposed move to Barcelona, he added, “It’s up to him. Of course I would like to have Lewandowski in my team.”
Frenkie de Jong answers on his conversation with Robert Lewandowski: “He’s an amazing player, one of the best in the world. It’s up to him [on his future to Barça].”
“Of course I would like to have Lewandowski in my team”, he added.
