Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is ready to give 20 year old Manchester United forward Facundo Pellistri a chance to prove his worth at Manchester United in pre-season before making a decision on his immediate future, according to Manchester Evening News.
The promising starlet has typically dazzled with Uruguay whilst on international duty, but struggled to make an impact while on loan with Spanish La Liga side Alaves.
Last summer, he re-joined Alaves on loan after spending the second half of the 2020-21 campaign there, but made just six starts last season, registering a measly 750 minutes of action across 23 appearances.
While he struggled for playing time at club level, the 20 year old impressed on international duty with Uruguay throughout the calendar year.
Pellistri has impressed as a right winger for Uruguay, an area of weakness for Manchester United, with the 20 year old registering 3 assists in 6 appearances for Uruguay.
5 of those 6 appearances for Uruguay has been from the start, showing how important he has become for his country.
While Erik ten Hag is poised to give Pellistri a chance to impress him during pre-season this summer, another loan exit next season is not being ruled out.
Manchester Evening News adds that the Uruguay international is eager to gain regular playing time next season and he acknowledges a loan move might help in his bid to start matches at the World Cup later this year.
The right side of attack has been identified as a problem position for United given the majority of United’s wingers like to operate in an inverted role cutting in off the left flank.
However, Pellistri is comfortable playing as a right winger as it is his natural position.
Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and even Anthony Elanga all like to play in the left wing even though they have been used in the right wing.
Erik ten Hag is desperate to fix Manchester United’s long-term issues on the right flank and this could create an opportunity for Pellistri next season as it is his best position.
Mason Greenwood, who has impressed from the right wing, remains unavailable for selection while Amad Traore could leave on loan after struggling for playing time with Rangers last season.
Pellistri joined United in the summer of 2020 for a fee of around €10 million (£8.5m).
