Manchester United warned Chelsea will hijack move for £400,000-a-week goal machine

Manchester United

Manchester United have been warned Premier League rivals Chelsea could beat the Red Devils to the signing of Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski.

This is according to former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan, who believes Chelsea will want to sign one of the “world’s best strikers” after the signings of Darwin Nunez and Erling Haaland at Liverpool and Man City respectively.

Lewandowski has made it clear that he wants leave German side Bayern Munich this summer and it is believed he is seeking wages of £400,000-a-week.

Lewandowski wants to join Spanish side Barcelona but they are currently in a financial crisis and must sell their big earners before signing a new player.

According to reports, Chelsea and Manchester United are ready to swoop for Lewandowski this summer as they believe his £40million Barcelona swoop will fall through.

Chelsea are believed to be keen on signing a new striker this summer after Romelu Lukaku flopped following his move to Inter Milan.

“I think Chelsea will be looking at what other teams have done with Nunez and Haaland,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“They’ll be wanting to have one of the world’s best strikers themselves.

“You can never take away what Lewandowski has done in his career. Look at Cristiano Ronaldo as well, they are pretty similar.

“They keep going, stay fit. Lewandowski is a player who will score goals if he gets the right service – there’s no doubt about it.

“But you would be paying a lot of money for a 33-year-old who would maybe only be around for two seasons.

“He’s got to hit the ground running to make it worthwhile.”

Lewandowski scored 58 goals and provided 10 assists in just 56 games last season for club and country.

The Poland international striker has been an absolute goalscoring machine for Bayern Munich over the years.

Is Lewandowski really needed at Manchester United with Cristiano Ronaldo already at the club?
