According to Dutch media outlet De Telegraaf, Ajax star Jurrien Timber is moving closer and closer to staying at Ajax next season instead of joining Manchester United.
New Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag had keen on reuniting with his former Ajax player at Manchester United but the Dutch international centre-back has concerns over joining Manchester United.
After featuring for Holland in the UEFA Nations League games following the end of the season, Timber is now set to go on holiday where he will think about his future amid major interest from Man United.
The Ajax defender hasn’t fully made up his mind on his future but there are now big chances of him staying at Ajax for at least one more season as he isn’t keen on making the high-profile move yet.
With Timber reluctant about joining Manchester United this summer, Ten Hag might now have to look at other options in his shortlist.
Timber is reportedly concerned about joining Manchester United with the World Cup in Qatar just months away.
Timber recently hinted he will only leave Ajax months to the World Cup if he is guaranteed regular playing time.
When asked if he’ll stay at Ajax next season amid heavy links to a Man United move, Jurrien Timber said: “Of course I can develop further at Ajax. I am 100 per cent sure of that, I don’t feel like I’m done at the club.
“I can also develop at other clubs. I am now focusing on the upcoming international matches and then go on holiday, then I’ll have to think about it some more.
“In the end, my gut feeling will be the deciding factor. The picture has to be right. You can go to a big club, but if you’re not going to play there it’s better to stay with Ajax, and Ajax is also a big club.”
The centre-back is worried a move to Manchester United could jeopardize his chances of making the Netherlands’ FIFA World Cup squad.
Timber has certainly observed how Donny van de Beek, who used to be a regular for Ajax and the Holland national team, has struggled to get game time since joining Manchester United.
Van de Beek’s lack of game time at Manchester United have also seen him lose his place in the Holland national team.
Timber feels he could be overlooked by Holland head coach Louis van Gaal if unable to hold down a regular spot at United upon joining the Red Devils.
Holland head coach Louis van Gaal has also warned Timber against joining Manchester United this summer.
“I think a player with his [Timber’s] qualities can play in the Premier League,” Van Gaal said.
“That’s not a problem. But if he has to make this step now… that’s another question.
“It is not so wise I think [to move to United]. He has to play.”
