Reports in Spain claim Manchester United have now moved closer to signing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong this summer.
According to AS via Daily Mail, De Jong has now cleared his locker at Barcelona as he prepares to join Manchester United this summer.
Erik ten Hag is now set to achieve his desire of reuniting with De Jong at Old Trafford.
Barcelona midfielder De Jong worked under Ten Hag at Ajax, where they won the domestic double and reached a Champions League final together in 2019.
De Jong’s decision to clear his locker at Barcelona means United are now getting closer to reaching an agreement with Barcelona for his transfer.
Despite Barcelona’s member voting in favour of the sale of future merchandising and television rights which will see the Spanish side raise £600million, Barcelona remain keen on selling De Jong.
It was believed the funds raised will mean Barcelona will no longer sell De Jong but AS insists Barcelona still remain keen on selling the Dutch midfielder this summer.
Barcelona are reportedly now offering De Jong to interested clubs for €80million but no club has responded except Manchester United.
The report adds that Manchester United are the only club to have submitted an official bid for De Jong, with the Red Devils offering €60million plus €10million in add-ons.
De Jong has been a regular at Barcelona for the past three years, playing 140 games across all competitions and scoring 13 goals.
United fans will also be excited about the potential arrival of De Jong at Old Trafford as the club eyes a return to the Premier League top four.
The Guardian claim Manchester United are confident Barcelona will lower their asking price for De Jong as the Red Devils are the only club interested in signing the midfielder this summer.
The Red Devils are reportedly conscious Barcelona are desperate to sell De Jong to remove his huge wage from their wage bill.
Meanwhile, Jurrien Timber, who Ten Hag also wants to sign, is set to stay at Ajax.
United have been informed that the defender, who can operate at right-back and in central defence, wants guaranteed first-team football to secure his Netherlands place for the World Cup.
