Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Portugal international midfielder Vitinha, according to Portuguese media outlet A Bola via The Hard Tackle.

Vitinha has a release clause of €40million in his FC Porto contract and is set to leave the Portuguese champions this summer.

The Portugal international is also a target for Newcastle United, with FC Porto adamant about recouping the full value of his release clause.

The 22-year-old midfielder a key player for his Portuguese club during the 2021-22 campaign as they won the Portuguese title.

He made 47 appearances in all competitions, contributing four goals and five assists for FC Porto last season.

Vitinha only has little over two years left to run on his current deal and looks set to make the move to Manchester United this summer.

Vitinha made his first-team debut for FC Porto in January 2020 but had to wait until the recently-concluded season before really becoming an important player for the Portuguese giants.

Vitinha spent the 2020-21 season on loan with Premier League side Wolves but made just 5 starts for Wolves in the Premier League.

With Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic leaving Manchester United this summer, signing a midfielder this summer is a priority for Manchester United.

The Red Devils are keen on signing Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona but have failed to make any breakthrough in talks with the Spanish side.

Manchester United have also offered a two-year contract to Christian Eriksen but the Denmark international wants to take his time to consider all offers he has received.

Vitinha has thus emerged as a contingency for Manchester United, although he is not a like-for-like alternative for De Jong.

New Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag needs two midfielders to be signed this summer so the Red Devils would still pursue a move for De Jong even after a deal for Vitinha is completed.

The Red Devils are reportedly set to activate his release clause in the coming days with Ten Hag urging the club to deliver the players needed.

Liverpool, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Lazio are also reportedly interested in signing the 22 year old midfielder.
