Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has been stunned by the decision of Ajax defender Jurrien Timber to reject a move to Manchester United, according to Metro UK.

Timber was handed his Ajax debut by Ten Hag and Ten Hag has helped to make Timber into a Netherlands international.

The report claims Ten Hag was confident that Timber will make the move to Manchester United so much so that he told the club to focus on deals for Frenkie de Jong and Christian Eriksen before negotiating one for Timber.

Ten Hag has now been left ‘stunned’ by Timber’s reluctance to join him at Manchester United.

Timber rejected the chance to reunite with Ten Hag at Manchester United due to fears he won’t be an automatic starter at Manchester United, which could affect his chances of making the Holland World Cup squad later this year.

Holland boss and former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal warned Timber against making the move to Manchester United.

Van Gaal warned Timber that he risk losing his place in the Holland World Cup squad if he joins Manchester United as he won’t be an automatic starter for the Red Devils.

“I think a player with his [Timber’s] qualities can play in the Premier League,” Van Gaal said.

“That’s not a problem. But if he has to make this step now… that’s another question.

“It is not so wise I think [to move to United]. He has to play.”

Timber’s decision to reject a move to Manchester United means the Red Devils must now look at other alternatives.

Villarreal’s Pau Torres is another centre-back on Manchester United’s transfer shortlist and the Red Devils could now make a move for the Spain international in the coming weeks.

The Spaniard was a target for the Red Devils last summer and is still attracting interest from Manchester United this summer.

Torres has a release clause of around £50m in his contract.
