Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag wants Man Utd CEO Richard Arnold to prove he’s ready to take the club to the next level.
According to The Mirror, Ten Hag has urged the Man Utd board to complete deals for Frenkie de Jong and Christian Eriksen as it would be a statement of intent that United are heading in a new direction.
Eriksen is a free agent after leaving Brentford following the expiration of his short-term contract with the club.
Barcelona are demanding a guaranteed €80million for the transfer of De Jong, a fee Manchester United consider as expensive for the former Ajax midfielder.
Manchester United have already had a €60million guaranteed fee for De Jong rejected by Barcelona.
The Red Devils have also offered a two year contract to Eriksen but face competition from his former clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Brentford.
Ten Hag has made it clear to the Man Utd board that signing De Jong and Eriksen this summer is imperative to implementing his style at the club.
Ten Hag considers De Jong as a vital player for the style of play he intends to bring to Man Utd, as the Barcelona midfielder would play at the base of midfield and control the tempo of the team.
Eriksen came through the Ajax system and Ten Hag believes his love of possession and ability to press would help him apply his desire playing style at the Theatre of Dreams.
Ten Hag rejected the chance of signing Yves Bissouma before he left Brighton for Tottenham Hotspur, with the Dutch tactician insisting the two midfielders he wants are De Jong and Eriksen.
Man Utd also considered signing Vitinha from Porto but Ten Hag insisted it’s Eriksen and De Jong or nothing.
Dutch journalist Marcel van der Kraan has also confirmed Eriksen and De Jong are Ten Hag’s only options in the middle of the park and he is fully focused on signing both players.
“Erik Ten Hag has made it clear to the board that he wants Frenkie de Jong and Christian Eriksen,” he told Sky Sports.
“For his identity, role model and style at Man United, it’s all about those two players. He doesn’t want other players apart from those two.”
