Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha has backed Bruno Fernandes to be the main man for Manchester United next season under Erik ten Hag.
Fernandes has been one of the best players for Manchester United since arriving from Sporting CP in January 2020.
Speaking to BoyleSports Premier League, the ex-United striker said: “Bruno Fernandes can be the main man at Man United next season, he definitely has the quality to do that.
“I expected him to struggle a little bit because his form when he arrived was exceptional.
“During some games last season, the fans saw that he’s capable of doing amazing things, but to do it on a regular basis is the challenge and if the club is always in transition and always changing It’s never easy for players.
“Bruno is definitely one of the star players, but a lot of players in the squad have to improve their game from last season as I believe only Cristiano Ronaldo and David de Gea can escape criticism.
“Bruno works hard and turns up fighting even when he’s not playing well and that’s the type of people that need to lead Man United forward.”
Saha also wants Manchester United to build on the tenures of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick next season.
Solskjaer joined United as caretaker boss in December 2018 and, after overseeing some stellar results during that period, was offered the full-time position in March 2019.
However, at the beginning of last season things soured for the Norwegian.
Solskjaer was sacked in November after Manchester United suffered heavy defeats to Leicester City and Liverpool before falling to a new low when soon-to-be-relegated Watford beat them 4-1 in November.
Having initially steadied the ship, Rangnick struggled to inspire the squad once it became clear that he would not be leading the club next season.
“If they were to regain a Champions League place next season that would be a step forward but I wouldn’t expect them to win any trophies,” said Saha.
“Things went forward with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The fans saw some improvement with Ralf Rangnick too but there’s been situations that have been difficult for any manager to manage.
“The arrival of Erik ten Hag is a step forward. There’s a lot of improvement that needs to happen with the infrastructure and Man United need the respect that the club deserves to be re-established.”
