Manchester United and Barcelona are yet to reach an agreement for Ajax international Frenkie de Jong.

Barcelona are reportedly holding out for a fee of €100million with €80million guaranteed while Manchester United offered €70million with €60million guaranteed which was rejected by Barcelona.

The Spanish side have now revealed why they are demanding so much for De Jong.

According to ESPN, Barcelona are blaming La Liga’s strict financial rules for the high transfer fee they are demanding from Manchester United for De Jong.

Manchester United are keen to land De Jong this summer while Barcelona want to let the midfielder leave to raise money to fund their own transfer business ahead of next season.

The report reveals Barcelona are subject to financial restrictions after breaching their salary cap and as such can only reinvest a third of what they make on transfers or save in wages back into the playing squad.

With Barcelona only able to spend a third of what they make from players, they are now driving up the value of their players to get as much money as they can get.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is hoping both clubs reach a compromise as he is eager to reunite with De Jong at Manchester United.

Ten Hag and football director John Murtough have prioritised a central midfielder as the club’s top target this summer.

De Jong is the first choice and Christian Eriksen is viewed as an additional rather than an alternative option.

Manchester United have reportedly offered 30 year old Eriksen a two year contract to join Manchester United this summer.

As well as signing a midfielder, United are also in the market for a versatile forward who can play in a number of positions across the front line

According to The Sun, Manchester United are closing in on our first major signing of the summer with the club now set to complete the signing of Ajax star Antony.

Manchester United officials have travelled to Amsterdam to get a deal for the Brazilian over the line.

Antony had an outstanding last season with 12 goals and creating ten assists in 33 games in all competitions for the Dutch title winners.
