Manchester United have reportedly reached an agreement with Barcelona for the transfer of Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong, according to reports from Spain.
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag made signing De Jong a key priority for the club this summer.
Ten Hag managed De Jong at Ajax and was part of his squad that reached the Champions League semi-final in the 2018/19 season, before losing to Tottenham.
The Dutch international is now set to be Ten Hag’s first signing as Manchester United boss.
Negotiations between Manchester United and Barcelona for De Jong had taken while before progress was made on Saturday.
Manchester United have reportedly agreed to pay €80million for De Jong, close to the price Barcelona were demanding for the Dutch midfielder.
According to Spanish media outlet Sport, Manchester United are now confident of completing the signing of De Jong before Thursday, 30 June.
The former Ajax star is seen as pivotal to the system Ten Hag wants to implement at United.
He’s a player who can pick up the ball in deep positions and carry it forward, which is an essential trait under Ten Hag.
A deal for De Jong should pave the way for a host of deals for United, who are aiming to bring in five signings this summer.
Ajax winger Antony is another familiar face Ten Hag wants to reunite with, while Manchester United have also offered a contract to Christian Eriksen.
Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries is also a target for Manchester United with Ten Hag not having Aaron Wan-Bissaka as part of his plans for next season.
Manchester United have switched attention to Ajax centre-back Lisandro Martinez after club-mate Jurrien Timber indicated he would reject a move to United.
Watford goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann could replace Dean Henderson, who is set to join Nottingham Forest on loan.
So far, it has been mainly exits rather than incomings at Manchester United with the likes of Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard and Nemanja Matic leaving on free transfers.
