What Frenkie de Jong told me about Manchester United transfer – Former Barca boss Ronald Koeman reveals

Former Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman has revealed what Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong told him about Manchester United transfer.

De Jong is Erik ten Hag’s priority signing this summer. Ten Hag seeks to build the Manchester United team around the Barcelona midfielder.

Ten Hag worked with De Jong during their time together at Ajax and views the Holland international as essential to the brand of football he wishes to implement at Old Trafford.

Manchester United failed with an initial bid for De Jong but have now reportedly agreed a fee of €85million including add-ons with Barcelona.

Koeman still maintains a close relationship with De Jong, having coached the midfielder at Barcelona and also in international level with Holland.

According to Koeman, De Jong told him he wants to stay at Barcelona amid mounting speculation he is set to join Manchester United.

“The only thing I know is that Frenkie wants to continue at Barca,” Koeman told Esport 3.

“A couple of days ago he told me he wanted to continue. What I don’t know is if Barca wants to sell him or needs money because he is one of the few players for whom they can get a good amount.

“For me, De Jong is a great player for Barca.”

Meanwhile, Brazil legend Rivaldo has told Ajax star and Brazil international to join Manchester United this summer.

Rivaldo told Betfair: “Another player that is heavily under the Premier League’s radar is Ajax’s Antony, who enjoyed a fantastic 2021-22 season.

“And I’m sure he attracted the attention of bigger clubs.

“At the moment, Manchester United – who have his former manager Erik ten Hag – seems to be the closest club to signing him and I’m confident we’ll all enjoy watching him play at Old Trafford.

“Just like [Leeds United winger] Raphinha, he might benefit from playing at a bigger club to get closer to being a regular at the World Cup.

“Though I also think his place in the squad is safe since Tite has been calling him up lately and has confidence in his qualities.”
