Manchester United have suffered a huge blow to the new season after Cristiano Ronaldo asked to leave the club.

According to The Times, Cristiano Ronaldo has asked to be allowed to leave Manchester United should the Red Devils receive a satisfactory offer.

The 37 year old forward reportedly wants to leave Manchester United because he wants to continue playing in the Champions League for the remainder of his career.

Ronaldo has never missed Champions League football since leaving Sporting Lisbon for Manchester United in 2003.

The 37 year old Portugal international has been part of 19 consecutive Champions League seasons.

He has never played in the Europa League, in which United will feature this season after finishing sixth in the Premier League.

Ronaldo believes he has “three or four years” left at the highest level of the game and would like to spend them at a club where he is capable of adding to his team and individual achievements.

The report states that according to close friends, Ronaldo fully maintains his respect for United.

However, the striker has decided that his future no longer lies at United, given the current situation the club find themselves in.

Manchester United agreed to pay Juventus a guaranteed transfer fee of €15 million (£12.9 million) with a further €8 million in add-ons to sign Ronaldo last summer.

Ronaldo’s Manchester United contract runs until the summer of 2023 with the club having an option to extend for a further year.

In terms of potential destinations for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and a return to Serie A have all been mooted.

Ronaldo has won five Champions League and seven domestic League titles in a career which has delivered over 800 official senior goals for club and country.

He scored 24 goals for Manchester United in all competitions last season.

The 18 goals that he scored in the league last season is his lowest individual return since leaving United for Real Madrid for a fee of £80 million in 2009.
