Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has been told to be more ruthless as a defender and have ‘more devil in him’ to succeed next season.
Maguire struggled for form last season and it was expected he would be dropped as Manchester United captain by Erik ten Hag.
However, Ten Hag has confirmed Maguire would be wearing the captain’s armband next season.
Andy Townsend told talkSPORT about Harry Maguire: “I think there’s no question he’s a talented lad and a good footballer, of course he is.
“I’d like to see a bit more ruthlessness about the way he defends. I’d like to see something a bit more devil in him in the way he defends.”
“The best defenders have got the ability to hurt someone now and again, if they have to, to put the ball out the ground if they have to, to challenge and fly through someone if they have to,” Townsend continued.
“I look at Harry and he becomes a bit tentative, stepping one way and then backpedalling. He needs to be a bit more positive in his mind from the get-go this season and hopefully his confidence will return.
“There’s no doubt he’s a good footballer.”
Meanwhile, former Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand believes it is important that Manchester United invest in a new right-sided winger this summer.
“I think the problem position for Man United is the right-wing, because you’ve got Martial, Sancho and Rashford who all prefer playing on the left and are all more effective on the left,” Ferdinand told Vibe with Five. “So, you’ve got Elanga – even he is probably better on the left-hand side as well.
“You’ve got four players there all vying for one position and they are best placed on the left, probably. I think right-wing is a position Man United have to invest in.
“They’re going to have to try get rid of Martial if they can get him out. I think they’ll let him go.”
