Manchester United have denied reports Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is not willing to make the move to Old Trafford.

On Thursday, Spanish newspaper Sport claimed De Jong’s agent, Ali Dursun, had met with United CEO Richard Arnold as well as football director John Murtough and told them they were ‘wasting their time’.

The report claimed Frenkie de Jong has no intention of swapping the sunshine of Catalonia for Manchester as the midfielder and his girlfriend are happy at Barcelona, having recently bought a house.

Another report also claimed Frenkie de Jong had told his Barcelona teammates that it was ‘impossible’ for him to leave Camp Nou, particularly with no Champions League football on offer at Old Trafford.

However, The Sun have revealed Manchester United bosses claim Barcelona are responsible for the transfer impasse with Frenkie de Jong.

Manchester United bosses are convinced De Jong is open to moving to Old Trafford, having held talks with the midfielder before agreeing the deal with Barcelona.

De Jong also had several conversations with new United boss Erik ten Hag, who was his manager at Ajax, in which he confirmed his interest to join Manchester United.

Manchester United have revealed the reason for the delay in the transfer is the issue of wages that Barcelona owe De Jong.

Previous reports have suggested that De Jong was owed £17m in arrears, but The Sun claim the figure is closer to £24m.

Barcelona want Manchester United to pay it – or otherwise the sale of De Jong will do little to ease their financial fair play issues – but Manchester United have baulked at their demands and are refusing.

Manchester United reportedly still remain committed to signing the midfielder.
