Erik ten Hag has told the Manchester United board to keep pushing to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong despite the player’s reluctance to move to Old Trafford, according to The Guardian.

The report claims Ten Hag has told the Manchester United board to continue pushing for De Jong even if he is not signed before the new Premier League season begins.

Manchester United have reached an agreement with Barcelona which will see the Red Devils pay €75million guaranteed plus €10million in add-ons for De Jong.

However, De Jong is intent on staying at Barcelona and has shown no public indication that he would be prepared to join United.

Ten Hag has told John Murtough, United’s football director, and the CEO, Richard Arnold, that even if De Jong has not arrived by the season opener – Brighton’s visit to Old Trafford on 7 August – they should continue the chase.

Ten Hag believes the Barcelona midfielder is key to the style of play he is introducing to Manchester United and is keen on signing the midfielder at all cost.
