Liverpool are reportedly ready to challenge Manchester United for the signature of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong in the January transfer window, according to The Mirror.
The Barcelona midfielder was Erik ten Hag’s key transfer target during the summer transfer window but the 25 year old was reluctant to leave the Spanish side.
However, just a few months down the line, De Jong is considering his future at Barcelona ahead of the January transfer window due to the amount of game time he has received this season.
Liverpool are now ready to challenge Manchester United for the transfer of De Jong in January, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner nearing the end of their contracts, while Arthur Melo’s loan deal is also set to expire.
Manchester United are still keen on De Jong and have already got to work on reopening negotiations with Barcelona after seeing Xavi’s stance on starting him.
“I want to be a starter again. Against Bayern, I was not a starter and I hope to be against Real Madrid,’ De Jong told Ziggo Sport recently. “Maybe he (Xavi) has already decided, but normally we don’t know until the day of the game.”
