Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has been warned against signing Netherlands World Cup star Cody Gakpo because he is too similar to the club’s current attacking trio of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho
Gakpo has been one of the Netherlands’ best players at the World Cup so far, scoring twice for Louis van Gaal as his team tops Group A after two matches.
Following Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit from the club, Ten Hag is keen on signing a forward in January and has identified Gakpo as an ideal signing.
However, Red Devils legend Teddy Sheringham has argued the club do not need him as he is too similar to Martial, Rashford and Sancho, suggesting an out-and-out No 9 should be the priority instead.
“Manchester United do not need another flitty player like Gakpo in their ranks,” the 56-year-old told Boyle Sports. “We need a centre-forward who can lead the line now that Ronaldo has gone.
“We need a focal point for the team to hit and who can bring players into play. We cannot go for another technical player who can play as a winger or a false nine. We already have so many of those in Martial, Rashford and Sancho and right now it’s a bit of a detriment, to be honest.”
