England boss Gareth Southgate has heaped praise on Luke Shaw for opting to stay with the England squad and help prepare for Sunday’s clash with Ukraine despite being suspended.

Shaw was shown two yellow cards in the space of just 54 seconds during England’s 2-1 victory over Italy on Thursday evening and is now banned for the visit of Ukraine.

But, rather than return to United earlier than planned, Shaw took part in full training on Saturday and is expected to be in the stands at Wembley.

Southgate said of Shaw: “Luke, to start with, loves being with us. I think he wants to contribute where he can.

“He was able to help us with training today as well. I think he just epitomises the spirit of the group really.

“And that togetherness and that commitment is hugely important.”
