England manager Gareth Southgate has warned Manchester United captain Harry Maguire that he has to leave Manchester United in the summer to keep his place in the England squad.
Maguire has been one of the first names on the team sheet during Southgate’s time in charge of the national team, playing an important role in England’s runs deep into the last two World Cups and recent European Championship.
However, Maguire has lost his place in the starting XI at Manchester United and is behind Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof in pecking order at Manchester United.
“Inevitably it’s not a situation that can continue forever,” Gareth Southgate said of Maguire.
“It’s like Kalvin Phillips [at Manchester City], they are important players for us and with Kalvin we haven’t got many players who can play as that single [midfield] pivot.”
