‘Nightmare scenario’ – Manchester United legends Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes sum up Andre Onana’s awful performance in Bayern Munich defeat
Manchester United legends Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes have both slammed goalkeeper Andre Onana after his calamitous errors against Bayern Munich.
Despite starting on the front foot, the team’s morale was demoralised after Onana conceded a cheap goal. An easy strike from Leroy Sane rolled underneath him and into the back of the net.
Assessing the error at half-time, former United defender Ferdinand described it as a ‘nightmare scenario’ for the Cameroonian.
He told TNT Sport: “He is as confident as you like with his feet but as a goalkeeper you are expected to come in and makes saves.
“It is a great bit of skill from Sane to set it up well but he doesn’t hit it with any real purpose. It is not wide of him, it is not in the corners.
“He should save this, he should be picking this up and looking for his next pass. It is a very, very bad mistake and one he needs to recover from.”
Onana’s reaction was telling, as he slumped on the pitch before being urged to his feet by Diogo Dalot.
“He knows he has made a big mistake,” United legend Scholes added.
It remains to be seen if Onana can bounce back from this awful display to show why the club was willing to sign him, and let go of David de Gea.
