Jonny Evans reveals what Ten Hag told him about his role at Manchester United
Manchester United veteran defender Jonny Evans has revealed he signed for the club to provide defensive cover for the team.
The Northern Irishman is not overly bothered about being in the starting XI, as he is more focused on helping the team when and where he can.
“No, not at all, I was told I’d come in as cover for the other players, which was completely fine,” Jonny Evans said when asked about his role.
When asked about pushing for a starting XI spot. “That’s the mindset.
“There’s been a few injuries with Harry [Maguire] and [Lisandro] Martinez out injured and Rapha [Varane] coming back from a time out. So it’s just trying to be ready, mentally ready and I came in tonight just filling in.
“You don’t even… well I probably did dream about it a few times but I wasn’t exactly thinking about it constantly!
“But you get to my age and you probably start thinking about winding down a bit now, you get apprehensive, but there’s no other option for me. I have to be as professional as I can and hopefully my body can pull me through.”
Speaking about how he felt about starting the Burnley match, Evans said: “I loved every minute of it. Before the game, sometimes you get this feeling and it was like that today – I was just so excited.
“I was absolutely buzzing and obviously it’s a nighttime game so you have to wait even longer! But this was I think my 200th game for Man United, that’s a number I never even thought I’d reach.”
Evans started his first game for United in eight years in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Burnley, and provided a sublime assist for Bruno Fernandes’ superb strike.
