‘It was amateur’: Man United legend slams the club for the shameful exit of this player
Former Manchester United winger Lee Sharpe has slammed the club’s ‘amateur decision’ to replace David de Gea with Andre Onana, last summer.
Sharpe is also critical of the way the Spaniard was ushered out of the club despite his status as a legendary player.
Speaking to AGamble.com, former Old Trafford winger Lee Sharpe said: “I know David De Gea took a lot of criticism for some of the mistakes that he was making but he was also an incredible goalkeeper.
“I think the way Manchester United brought Andre Onana in and ushered him [De Gea] out of the door was a little bit amateur as well. I think there’s probably a few people that are questioning the decision
“It’s only natural when the replacement comes in and makes more mistakes than the guy that has gone out, you’ve got to question if the team has made the right decision, and at the moment it’s very dubious if they have.”
De Gea left the club at the end of last season without a proper farewell, with the club not extending the Spaniard’s contract.
United boss Erik ten Hag opted to bring in Onana from Inter Milan for £44 million, but the 27-year-old has endured a torrid start to life at Old Trafford.
