Mason Mount is struggling at Manchester United because the Red Devils are a bigger club than Chelsea, Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has claimed.
Mount swapped west London for Old Trafford this summer in a £60m deal but the England international has failed to impress so far under Erik ten Hag.
Ferdinand feels Mount is still not used to the level of scrutiny that comes with being a Manchester United player.
“No disrespect to Chelsea but he was a golden boy and he came through the ranks there,” Ferdinand said after Mount’s performance in the 1-0 win over Fulham on Saturday.
“He was never really on the receiving end of negativity or scrutiny, ‘Should he be here, he’s not good enough, should he be here?’ – He’s never had that in his life really.
“He needed backing from Frank [Lampard] when he was at Derby and then when he went back to Chelsea.
“But the pressure when you come to Man United, it brings a different kind of weight on the shoulders, the badge is heavier when things aren’t going well.
“He is seeing and hearing that now. I just think players need time. As long as he gets chances in the right area of this football club Mason Mount is a sure-fire bet to make it as a Man United player.”
