Key Manchester United figure set to leave the club this week

John Murtough is set to leave Manchester United as part of widespread changes made by incoming minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

This move comes in light of incoming minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s acquisition and subsequent changes to the club’s management and operational structures.

Ratcliffe’s influence seems to be prompting a reshuffling at various levels within the club, signaling a new direction or approach for Manchester United’s future operations and strategic planning.

Murtough’s departure marks a notable change within the club’s hierarchy, potentially indicating a shift in how Manchester United will approach football operations, scouting, and player acquisitions moving forward.

John Murtough has held the position of Director of Football at Manchester United since March 10, 2021.

The Englishman joined United in 2013, after stints with Fulham and Everton, and impressed during his work with the academy and United’s scouting departments.

He will leave the club this week after resigning from his position.

While the first team promotions of Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho and the thriving academy has earned him some credit, Murtough has been criticised for his handling of United’s transfer policy.

Dan Ashworth will come in as his replacement, as the new Manchester United Director of Football.

“We want to thank John for his loyal service over many years, and for his support and integrity during this period of transition,” Sir Jim Ratcliffe wrote in a statement.

“He leaves with our best wishes for the future.”
