Ruben Amorim: We believed to the end

Manchester United sealed a stoppage-time winner against Leicester City, courtesy of a headed goal from Harry Maguire.
United had to crawl from a goal down to win this game, and Ruben Amorim praised his team’s mental strength to keep believing.
Manchester United fans were treated to a dramatic finish at Old Trafford as the Red Devils clinched a stoppage-time victory over Leicester City, thanks to a powerful header from Harry Maguire. The late winner capped off a comeback performance, with United fighting back from a goal down to secure all three points.
After the match, manager Ruben Amorim praised his team’s resilience, highlighting their mental strength to keep pushing until the final whistle.
“We had to believe until the end, but this game has nothing to do with the time of Fergie,” Amorim said, referencing the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson’s era of iconic late goals.
While Amorim was pleased with the result, he admitted the performance left room for improvement.
“I think the performance, we have to do so much better with the ball, without the ball. We didn’t have any energy in the beginning, especially in the first half.”
United struggled to find their rhythm early on, but adjustments at halftime saw a more spirited side emerge in the second half.
“Then in the second half, we played a little bit better, with a little more speed, winning second balls. Then we managed to turn things around, so it was a good result, not a good performance.”
Amorim took full responsibility for the team’s sluggish start, acknowledging that it’s on him to get more from his players.
“The coach is the first responsible. When one team doesn’t perform, doesn’t improve, it is the coach. But we are here to do things, to see the game, to study the game, and try to improve for the next game.”
Reflecting on what needs to change, Amorim pointed to the fundamentals, stressing the importance of tightening up both in possession and defensively.
“I think it’s the small things. If you see the games, sometimes it’s to control the ball, to have the ball, don’t give the ball away in the first pressure. It’s the small things, it’s the big things, it’s everything.”
With this hard-fought victory in the bag, Amorim knows there’s work to be done, especially when it comes to consistency at home.
“It’s this moment. It’s hard away but especially at home, but we have to cope with that and we will try to do it next game.”
Despite the mixed performance, United fans will be buoyed by the team’s fighting spirit, as the Red Devils continue their push for success under Ruben Amorim.
